Art and culture in San Antonio? They DO exist (and you don't want to miss them)

Art and culture in San Antonio, Ibiza

It is all too common for people who do not know or have never visited San Antonio to have a distorted image of the town. Here you can find a lot of art, culture and alternative leisure activities beyond the famous sunset and the Ibizan nightlife...

Indeed, our town has a lot to offer: not everything is going to be sun, beach and drunkenness tourism, for heaven's sake! San Antonio and its people, like Stic Urban Hotel, have a cosmopolitan spirit and love for their roots: today we are going to show you the misnamed "Side B" of the town.

And we say misnamed because art exhibitions, auteur film screenings and concerts are not hidden from anyone or anything. However, sometimes we get carried away by the labels that (through bad faith or ignorance) have been placed on our beloved home and we ignore that San Antonio is also art and culture.

ORIGINAL VERSION CINEMA, AUTEUR FILMS AND FESTIVALS 5 MINUTES FROM OUR HOTEL (LITERALLY)

A short walk from our hotel in Ibiza will take you to the emblematic Cine Regio, one of the oldest cinemas on the island, which still conserves the atmosphere of the cinemas of yesteryear: huge curtains, red seats and ushers. It is also both historic and legendary, as it was the first cinema in Spain to install the Dolby Surround® sound system (and it still works like a charm).

At the Cine Regio you can not only see the latest blockbuster films, but it also becomes the epicentre of cinephilia with the sessions of the Zinètic project (auteur films in original version) and the screening of premieres of the Ibicine Festival

But you can also discover local history and tradition in this venue: the Cine Regio hosts, among other local folklore events, the Festival de Bailes, Música y Canciones de Populares (Festival of Popular Dances, Music and Songs).a

Come on down, behind the curtain's and in the very heart of San Antonio there is a good dose of culture awaits you...

A SPACE FOR ART AND CULTURE THAT WAS ONCE ( WAIT FOR IT!) THE HOME OF WALTER BENJAMIN

Yes, San Antonio pays homage to the German-born universal philosopher, essayist and writer (Berlin, 1892-Portbou, 1940) in the Cultural Space of Sa Punta des Molí. It is one of the attractions of the already beautiful Paseo Marítimo.

There, in addition to the plaque commemorating Walter Benjamin at the entrance to the exhibition hall (he spent part of his life in the area in the early 1930s), you can see a 19th-century mill, a waterwheel from the Arab period and a typical peasant house that is now the exhibition centre.

Inside you will find works by local and foreign artists and outside there is an open-air auditorium where, especially in the summer season, concerts, music festivals of all kinds of styles and theatre and dance performances are held.

An enclave that any self-respecting culture lover should not miss.

HISTORICAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE OF THE FISHING AND MEDITERRANEAN SAN ANTONIO

We love the marine breeze and, to a certain extent, it defines us. We are a coastal town, a town that loves the sea. And this can be seen in our most beloved heritage. No one should miss the 14th century church in the centre of San Antonio, but in today's article the tide takes us to show you two purely Mediterranean locations.

We are talking about the Cap Blanc Aquarium and the Ses Coves Blanques lighthouse. In the first place, an old natural cave converted into an aquarium, you can see a multitude of marine species native to Ibiza and learn more about our marine heritage, as it forms part of the network for the recovery of marine species. It is very close to Caló des Moro beach.

The second, located at the beginning of the Paseo Marítimo (next to the port), is a 19th-century building, now converted into a socio-cultural centre, which includes an exhibition hall and the Sea Interpretation Centre.

We are sure you will enjoy all these places and see San Antonio in a different way!
